The Makers is a new project by America House Odesa — a documentary film series exploring the stories of people who helped shape the United States.
Is it possible to be a Hollywood actress, a style icon of your time — and at the same time help pioneer technology that would eventually pave the way for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth? Yes. Just ask Hedy Lamarr.
In the 1930s and 1940s, Lamarr was one of Hollywood’s most famous actresses, starring in major studio films and regularly appearing on magazine covers. But away from the film set, she was also an inventor. During World War II, together with composer George Antheil, Lamarr developed a frequency-hopping system for radio communication.
During her lifetime, Lamarr’s work as an inventor remained far less known than her film career. Today, her invention is recognized as an important milestone in the history of wireless communication — part of the technological lineage that eventually led to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
So, join us to watch and discuss in English a documentary about Hedy Lamarr — a Hollywood star who would come home after filming and work on her inventions.

У 1930–40-х Ламарр була однією з найвідоміших акторок Голлівуду, знімалася у великих студійних фільмах і регулярно з’являлася на обкладинках журналів. Але поза знімальним майданчиком вона займалася винахідництвом. Під час Другої світової війни разом із композитором Джорджем Антейлом Ламарр розробила систему радіозв’язку зі стрибкоподібною зміною частоти.
За життя Ламарр її винахідницька робота залишалася значно менш відомою, ніж кінокар’єра. Сьогодні її розробку вважають важливим етапом в історії бездротового зв’язку — технологічної лінії, до якої належать Wi-Fi, Bluetooth і GPS.
