How Are Urban Myths Created, and Who Writes Odesa’s History?

In 2011, American historian Charles King published Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams — one of the best-known English-language studies of Odesa’s history (yes, we noticed the two “s”s in Odessa too, but this is the original title of a scholarly work published 15 years ago, so we’re keeping it as it was published).

On November 4 at 6:00 PM, join us at America House Odesa for a conversation with Charles King!

His book won a National Jewish Book Award and has become an important work for those studying the history of our city. Unfortunately, it has never been translated into Ukrainian. We want to bring more attention to this book and hope that one day a Ukrainian edition will be published, with Ukrainian translators and editors involved in the process.

📚 How are urban myths created, and what role do historians play in shaping them?

📚 What first inspired Charles King to study Odesa?

📚 How did he work with historical sources and different, sometimes conflicting narratives about the city?

📚 Who shapes our understanding of the past, and how can historians challenge established narratives?

We’ll also explore multiculturalism, collective memory, and why the Black Sea region holds such an important place in Charles King’s research.

Our guest is Charles King, an American historian, author, and professor at Georgetown University. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Gods of the Upper Air, as well as Midnight at the Pera Palace and Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams. His work explores history, culture, national identity, and international relations.

✏️ Charles King will be in conversation with Oksana Dovgopolova — professor at the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), historian, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, and co-founder of the Past / Future / Art platform.

✏️ The conversation will be moderated by Maryna Goncharenko — Director of America House Odesa.

Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams — одне з найвідоміших англомовних досліджень історії Одеси (ми теж звернули увагу на Odessa з двома «s», але це оригінальна назва наукової праці, виданої 15 років тому, тому цитуємо її без змін).

The New York Times «Gods of the Upper Air», а також книг «Midnight at the Pera Palace» та «Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams».

America House Odesa.
